A Bands & Brews Session
A Bands & Brews Session
As you might know, our monthly Bands + Brews Session Series was quite the soiree last summer, throwing down monthly at Industry City in Sunset Park Brooklyn. The first hint of a nip in the air didn't give us a reason to stop the party, so last Fall we took the series inside Gowanus' classiest venue, The Bell House, celebrating our new home in style, with an intimate evening with R&B superstar Mario, rapper OnCue, and up-and-coming singer/dancer, Kayla Brianna. We've already ripped the wrapping off our set with Kayla Brianna. Today we're kicking off the New Year with a set from Connecticut born, Brooklyn based rapper OnCue. Where Brianna's set popped with glitz and club-ready energy, 'Cue's on a darker, more anguished trip here. His songs are steeped in personal and emotional lyricism, his production cinematic, perfectly suited for a gathering that was ready to bump and sway and hang on to his every word. "Every Last Dollar" is a highlight, equal parts hip hop and emo-tinged rock, rolling and building towards an honest proclamation. "If I had all the money in the whole wide world/I wouldn't buy you shit/If I was filthy rich/I'd spend it all on me, I'm a spend it all on me". It's not a selfish sentiment, but rather the end result of feeling hurt, wanting to take care of yourself, and seeing brighter days to come. He's an emotional rapper and this set is an emotional ride.
